Janice Golding is a South African ecologist based at the Environmental Change Institute at the University of Oxford (UK). She worked for the National Botanical Institute and coordinated a 10-country programme that dealt with plant Red Lists (funded by the IUCN, and the Global Environment Facility (GEF)). More recently, she established South Africa's National Threatened Plants Programme that is supported by the Norwegian Embassy (NORAD). Her book, Southern African Plant Red Data Lists, is widely regarded as a milestone for using scientific principles to formally document the threatened plants of southern Africa - where they occur, why they are threatened, and the research gaps. Her research interests, to date, have mainly focussed on the utility of museum collections for establishing conservation priorities. She is an ardent plant lover, and her favourite pastime is botanising and game drives. |
