N.21 - November, 24th 2003

from the article: The Trésor Rainforest Project (2): a botanic treasury opens up.

An rare nightly observation: Helosis cayennensis has freshly opened and has not been detected yet by the ants. Being a parasyte, this plant has no need for leaves and lives mainly underground. Like in fungi, only the reproductive structures emerge above the soil to produce seeds, after the flowers have been pollinated. No wonder that so little is known about these plants.
